For those of you who have supplied answers to Estrada’s question you will notice that they have one thing in common: they played in a bygone era. Even those who are still playing like Getzlaf and Brown are “throwback” players who are nearing the ends of their careers, and the game itself is significantly different today.
I still think it’s Monahan. He was the Flames first pick of the new core. He has been wearing a letter for a few years now. He is a centre. He captained his teams in Junior. And, importantly, Monahan is almost never in the penalty box. He will be a captain in the mould of Joe Sakic or Steve Yzerman, who quietly, confidently goes about his on-ice business, while leading his team in his physical and psychological commitment to the game, and to winning.
It takes all kinds of different players to lead and to win. Tkachuk is possibly the Flames most important player, but I continue to worry about how much the “C” on his jersey would threaten to nullify some aspects of his game that make him so valuable. (Remember, the game is MUCH different now than the days when K Tkachuk donned his letter.) The team doesn’t need to limit itself to just one “heart and soul.” This job can be undertaken by a few.
