You gotta think Lindros and Forsberg and those of their ilk had something to do with how the game evolved into the late 90s and early 00s. Teams had to load up on big strong defenders like Derian Hatcher, Adam Foote, Robyn Regehr, etc. Some of those guys could skate (Regehr) and others not so much. Added to that, we had 3 of the all-time great goaltenders in the league (Roy, Hasek, Brodeur) at once, and you suddenly get an emphasis on defending because teams that could keep their GAA down tended to succeed more.
