Being up on the second line Sam has had way more opportunities with the puck on his stick close to the net. It looks to me like he’s spent his whole NHL career worrying about all the other aspects of the game (defence, not taking penalties etc) that he’s forgotten how to score.
I’m against trading him.
But it’s obvious what he needs to work on.
I get a similar vibe from Backlund. He is so good at driving possession and getting the puck into the offensive zone that when he has an opportunity for a shot, it looks to me, like he shoots it into the goalies chest and thinks, “job well done”.
