As of right now, the NHL or the NHLPA has the right to end the current CBA in the 2020/21 season. They do this by exercising a clause in September 2019.
There has been some talk that the September 2019 deadline and the ending in 20/21 season could be moved if the NHL and NHLPA agree to push them back so that the World Cup can be held in 2020 without a lockout immediately following it.
