We've seen this deflating, untimely goaltending song and dance time and time again in the last handful of years. The organization can't afford to be wrong again should Smith's career actually be toast. You simply cannot waste this year with how good the rest of the team is. Move on now with Rittich and _____ (hopefully a trade for a backup) and Smith will be a distant memory by the end of the season.

The silver lining at least is the expiring contract.
When you look at goaltenders that are getting shelled statistically ...
Martin Jones - 5 more years at 5.75
Mike Smith - expiring
Jake Allen - 2 more years 4.35
M.A. Fleury - new 7M/3 year deal staring next year
Jacob Markstrom - 1 more year 3.7
Matt Murray - 1 more year 3.8
Vegas and San Jose have some troubles if their guy has lost it with the new equipment etc.
