I read somewhere the Alberta Liberal Party will never go anywhere until it changes it's name because it will always be associated with the federal Liberals. This is true, I think.
I believe the perceived association with the Federal grits is a factor but the Alberta liberals have a lot of other issues they need to tackle before they can take a serious run at the party.

Their #1 weakness in my view is a lack of a strong leader. Laurence Decore (sp?) was the last effective Liberal leader I remember in this province. He was guy that got people behind him. Its nothing against Kevin Taft - I think he's a very bright fellow - but he simply isn't the type of guy that will inspire people to toss out their existing government in favor of a new one.

Moreover, the Liberals have to come up with a platform that the people of Alberta will buy into. I agreed with some of their platforms but I am scared to death about going back into a deficit. I look at the expenditures and a lack of clear plan regarding where the money is going to come from and it scares me - right into voting PC.

That being said, if the Libs can come up with a strong leader, and solid plan for next election they have an opportunity. The PC party has been all about Ralph for too long - I'm not sure if they know how to rebrand the party with another face/leader.
