I think in general if you are reducing, reusing and recycling things that you could opt to do none of the Rs with, then you are helping. Moving forward with good intentions and some effort to doing the right thing is better than doing nothing and just belittling the people that are trying to help.
A better mindset than curves2000's poor attitude on this topic would be to come up with some better ideas for her friends. Like, if they're having conversations about recycling, not using straws, choosing suppliers of their everyday products that use less waste, it's crazy for me to think her reaction is to roll her eyes at how dumb they are. If you have some more meaningful ways for them to help the environment more, you're sitting there having a discussion with people that are clearly interested in helping out. Share your great ideas for them to help more instead of disparaging their efforts to make a difference.
