The Leafs are better off in figuring out a trade between the Canes, receiving a player like Pesce who is signed long term on a very friendly deal.

I mean, if they want to win a cup they need one really great defenseman. Rielly is good, not great. Doughty would probably put them into the status of cup favorite if they could fit him in.
I agree that long term that team would struggle to field a team under the cap. But elite talent costs money. Doughty would be worth it if they're serious about going after the cup. The defense they have right now is not going to get them there.
I'm just saying it makes sense for both teams without long term caps being considered.
