I switch to flats in winter becuase my feet are always cold, and no way would bike shoes get me down to -25. It also feels safer in the big snow days or ice where I can get my feet down if the bike goes on me. It happens so quickly some times I feel like I wouldn't have time to unclip, and I've been riding spd's for 25 years.
