I think it’s very very safe to say the Flames are nowhere near this dynamic with Hamilton and Ferland in the lineup, and CP fretting a Fox signing.

Fox is kind of the real wild card here. Carolina received fine players in Ferland and Hamilton. I personally didn't like Hamilton's complete game, but there is no denying that he is a really good player in some respects. Flames received 2 nice pieces that are signed for longer at reasonable prices who are young and fit right in. If I consider contract status and stability, I like this trade for us (although Carolina did fine too). But it allowed us to set the clock back a little as Jiri said.
If Carolina signs Fox and he becomes a star, it could be a huge win for them. But it seems likely that Fox was not going to sign with the Flames anyway, so it was nothing lost for us. Or if Carolina trades his rights for something decent, it could work to their advantage too.
Someone also pointed out that Hanifin is three months younger than Andersson. That just blows my mind considering that Hanifin will be closing in on 300 NHL games this season (knocks on wood) and Andersson is a prospect just graduating to rookie.
Honestly, both GMs deserve a pat on the back for this one. The trade seems a little more risky for Carolina in the long run, but they got great wildcard prospect.
