The same thing it's always been. A franchise center. Not Sean Monahan. Not Craig Conroy. Not Daymond Langkow. Not Olli Jokinen. The closest thing they have ever had was Marc Savard and he was out of shape and the coach hated him - without Bob Hartley he may never have realized his potential.
In the Flames' glory days they had Gilmour and Nieuwendyk.
You gotta be willing to go through growing pains for a franchise C. That means both terrible seasons and seasons where you keep throwing your talented center out there every shift through limited production and mistakes. The Avs did both for and with Nathan MacKinnon and while they presently lack the depth to capitalize, it's not far off for them especially as they have oodles of cap space.
Truth is, unless you have that kind of elite talent down the middle, you have no excuse to be a cap team. You're better off being patient and frugal than on the treadmill.
