Here is the problem, at least the way I see it.

There are 2 problems with defense right now, the turnovers and the goal tending.

I believe Peter will be able to clean up a lot of the problems with the breakdowns by both our defensive and offensive core. Not all of them as breakaways and breakdowns are part of hockey.

I don't believe Smith can clean up his problems in net. He is old, fading fast, past his prime. Every once in awhile he will have a stellar game but consistency is no longer the name of his game. Aging is a fact of life for anyone. We need a goalie who can pull out a stellar save a game, a goalie who the team knows will back them up when they let him down.

So if Peters can clean up some of the breakdowns, is Smith enough to get the team past mediocrity? I don't think so.

I would like to see Rittich get a good run of games, 5 to 10 good starts, and then go from there. Will Rittich be better than Smith and be able to hold the fort this year or do we need another starter ASAP?
