He for sure throws an elbow. Johnny's not looking for the puck, he's trying to regain balance. The puck isn't there, it's in the corner (and crosses right in front of McAvoy before he lines up the hit. McAvoy actually switches sides in order to throw a right elbow, instead of just bumping with his nearer left side.
It's late, at the head, with an elbow, against an off balance player.
