Matheson hit him, had him pinned against the boards, and finished the hit by shoving him one-handed to the ice.
Here's what it ultimately comes down to for me - When you see a hit from behind, or a hit to the head, or a high cross-check, you're immediately up in arms even if the recipient gets up completely uninjured, because you recognize the danger in the hit itself.
If Petterson bounces up, no one bats an eye, IMO. Heck, I'm betting many Canucks fans pass around the highlight and laud him for being able to handle NHL-level physicality. But because Petterson has no ability to absorb a hard fall, and unfortunately landed on his shoulder and/or head, the result has everyone retroactively deeming the hit dirty.
Edit: And before you ask, if it's Johnny, no, I don't like it, but because I see it as an opponent taking liberties with a skilled player, and I call for the Flames to respond in kind. I don't call for a suspension.
