Well I'd say if Wells hits 30+ homeruns, drives in 100 runs, scores 100+ runs and plays gold glove calibre centre field than the contract is worth it (well I don't think it will ever be worth it....but justified I guess?). Things like OBP, and OPS in my opinion get washed out by RBI and runs scored. If you have a .435 OBP but only score 80 runs or a .950 OPS and only drive in 85 runs than your team is probably losing a lot of games. Producing actual runs is what wins the games. Those other mudcrutch stats only indicate that theres a better probability that you'll score and drive in the runs. If his OBP is 355 but he scored 115 runs, and that OPS is .885 and he drives in 115 than I think you can give him a pass on not meeting those targets. Likewise if he hits the OPS and OBP targets but doesnt' get 100 runs and 100 RBI than I don't think he should be excused either.
IIRC A.J. Burnett also has an opt out clause after 3 years as well. He might opt out just because he's probably worth 13 million a year now even if his W-L record is mediocre.
