Although I quoted you, I wasn't referring specifically to you, there have been many similar posts, and this is why I also added Ryan to my comment. These were UFA signings, and of course we overpaid for them, because the only organizational asset they cost us was cap space.
Anyway, IMO, the only error on the coach's part is in not placing each player where they and the team have the best chance to succeed. It's not the coach's job to fix the GM's mistakes.
