So those two points lost may end up being the difference between making it or not.

But at the end of the season how do we determine WHICH of the two points lost are the ones which held the team out of the playoffs? Moreover, if the team happens to win their next five, or seven of the next 10, then I expect no one will care that they dropped Game #1. It's all pretty relative, and it is a long season. I think the message here is that losing the first game sucks, but it's not something over which to fret too badly.

Also why is it somehow acceptable to AGAIN lose the opener? Just because it's happened nine times in a row I'll never buy the assessment that it's ok because they always lose, that's just the way things go.

I don't see a single poster here who has said losing Game #1 is "acceptable." But what a number of posters are saying is that while losing the first game is not ideal it is not at all indicative of how the rest of the season will unfold.
