Yeah, the rules don't require a team to keep a claimed player in the NHL, but if they want to keep that player's rights, they do. So, for all intents and purposes, if you put in a waiver claim, it should be with the expectation that the player will remain on your NHL team for the full season.
The only exception would be if one of a team's goalies has been injured and the team claims another goalie off waivers to cover for the injured goalie until he returns, with the intention of waiving the claimed goalie once the injured goalie returns.
