“A couple of the guys saw the before picture,” Hathaway responded when asked about the reaction from his pals. “They were a little better after, I think.”

In fact, he was singled out by his new boss, Bill Peters, as one of the guys who impressed in what turned out to be a grouchy game.

“He was real competitive, and I thought he did a good job of putting pucks in good spots and playing the way you need to play,” Peters praised. “It’s a transition when you go from being in the off-season and playing summer hockey, where it’s all about skill and hanging onto pucks, probably a little too long. You can get some summer habits, and I didn’t think he had those.

“I think he did a good job of working and getting in on the forecheck, but also playing real responsible away from the puck.”
