I bet they're box-elder bugs. Have you got an elder, maple, or ash? We've got a maple in our front yard, and on warm days, a huge mass of them will come out and sun themselves on the south-and west-facing concrete. They're bright red when they're young, then turn dark with red chevrons as they age.
