It absolutely amazes me how terrible the oilers’ prospect depth is considering how long they’ve been picking high in every round of the draft. And during that time they have only once spent assets/draft picks to acquire “NHL talent” and that was the 1st round pick for Reinhart trade (hahahahaha!!).

Outside of that disaster they have had nothing but extra picks to go with their already gift draft picks. You would think that would mean their either have

(A) lots of young, talented depth at the NHL level or
(B) a deep prospect pool of talented players knocking on the door for NHL spots.

But the oilers have neither of those things.

I would say the flames have graduated to a level where they have plenty of (A) but are still using their late picks for high risk/high reward prospects to try and restock the cub boards. And the flames only had 3 years of high picks in the draft during their rebuild. The oilers have had a decade+ of that.

I don’t know if there is any team in the league as inept at developing players as the oilers are. Their only hopes are top five picks in the draft because they usually require less development... but even then, the oilers find ways to screw them up.
