If your job is sports radio you better ensure you are paying attention to football, baseball, basketball, tennis, golf, MMA, etc. It's one of the things Mike Richards was good at as he wasn't just a hockey guy. Hockey guys are a dime a dozen in Canada so you need to separate yourself with insight on other sports.

Gotta say I sort of disagree with this. Not so much in the fact that he shouldn't get knowledgeable about other sports. That's fine. But the morning show and Fan 960 should focus on hockey. Not the Raptors, who honestly nobody gives a rats about unless they're in the playoffs. Coverage of the Blue Jays sometimes goes overboard and eats into hockey too, especially at the beginning of an exciting hockey season when you want to hear about the hosts thoughts on the new team early on. Instead we get what Cliff says a little too much. Too much 'funny guy' banter and not enough chatter about the Flames. Klein would help bring a bit more seriousness to the show but if he's off talking about Tennis, Badminton and Bowling I really don't give a care. I tune to the Fan 960 for NHL and the Flames. Not for sports nobody cares about or are not the (by far) largest sports entertainment team in the city.
If Klein wants to go get knowledgeable I'd say go nuts, just don't move the needle away from the focus of where it should be which is hockey, because we barely get enough of that as is in the mornings since Boomer and Rhett only show up to screw around.

Pat is much more of a traditional "straight guy" and although him and Pinder tend to take a similar approach to their sports thought process, I think Pinder's break out strength will be that he likes to push buttons and take things off the rails a little bit which differs from Pat who sticks to the script.
Personally speaking, it's felt like the afternoon show has long been on a path of the traditional US sports talk radio show with lots of monotonous dry dialogue. I've found myself more and more enjoying the hockey podcast world where the details and content are important, but the dialogue is more natural. I think Pinder will help break the show out of the robotic feel and give it a bit more of a natural and engaging tone. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

this is bang on IMO. The afternoon show is boring as all hell unless Duhatschek is talking. Al Morgante (sp?) sounds uninformed on anything western conference. I actually wasn't a fan of Kerr's style but I do see why he appealed to people and could see why others were a fan- just wasn't my thing. I feel like he was a little too generous to his guests sometimes and wouldn't challenge them enough (sorta like Pat now). So yeah, Pinder should help with that and is a good fit. Also I imagine with the young family he welcomes the new hours probably.
