Smith is way too young to be Thrawn unless it's going to be a holocron or flashback or something like that. As I said when the original casting was announced, if they were going to introduce Thrawn, Richard E Grant would be the better casting choice. However, I agree with Captain that they're unlikely to introduce him at all.

The fact that Smith's casting was announced so late is probably an indication that it's not a big role, so it could be a small cameo similar to that character who shows up at the end of Solo.

Another recent casting announcement for Episode IX was the addition of Dominic Monaghan to the cast. He previously worked with JJ Abrams on Lost.
