In that same vein even Sandler put up decent performances in "more serious" roles in Punch-Drunk Love & Reign Over Me.

There is a reason those guys don't keep making more serious movies though:

Punch Drunk Love: $18M Box Office
Reign Over Me: $20M Box Office

In between those two movies though he made:

Anger Management: $135M
50 First Dates: $121M
The Longest Yard: $158M
Click $138M

Hmm wonder why he gave up on serious roles. They realized what their cash cow was, didn't care about how they were viewed in the industry and just made a ton of money.
