i have had a few different packs that were designed to sit away from your back and you still always wind up with back sweat. if that is your main concern, then panniers are really the only way to go - that assumes your bike can handle a rack.

Otherwise, get layered up. i find i can usually deal with the morning temps with fleece lined tights or long underwear and a short sleeve shirt, medium weight long sleeve and a cycling jacket up top. towrds the end of my riding season, i add fall gloves, toe warmers and an earband and a set of clear glasses.

it makes it a pain to lug that stuff home though and it seems like it is more to wash each night.
