Geez, I never knew that PoLLansky survived a fall through a three story hotel window...
Peter Polansky remembers only random details from the nightmare that once defined him, mainly the mirage of an intruder inside his hotel room, brandishing a knife. He does not remember running toward the window, but he can recall kicking through the glass, the shards slicing through his legs before he landed in the courtyard three stories below.
The accident took place in April 2006 in Mexico City, where he almost sleepwalked out of professional tennis. On Monday, three years later, he played in the first round of the United States Open, losing to Guillermo García López, 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 6-1, a continuation of his remarkable recovery. It was Polansky’s third five-set loss in a Grand Slam tournament this year.
“When it happened, people were doubting if he would play again, or even walk again,” said Dean Coburn, Polansky’s coach. “It was a serious accident, life-threatening. Where he’s come, it’s unbelievable.”
