There is a difference in that at the end of Ferland's contract (next off-season) he is a UFA, and Fox will also be a UFA if he doesn't sign.
The players the Flames got back are under team control.
I don't agree though that we should look at it as Ferland/Fox having no value. However, I do agree there contract status (or lack thereof) is an important element of the deal.
Interesting to see where Fox is ranked in some of the annuals
- THN has him as the #4 prospect behind Svechinkov, Mecas and Bean (all really good prospects) and ahead of the likes of Foegele, Kuokkanen and Drury (seems right to me)
- Forecaster has him much lower. #11 on the Carolina list behind those mentioned above and a bunch others including Saarela, Roy, Nedelijkovic and a guy they signed out of Europe as a free agent (Maenalanen).
So even how one perceives Fox as a prospect right now could be widely variable and impact perceptions of the deal.
