Because RNH has shown too be a better all around Center in his career than Draisaitl, and he's on a better contract.

Draisaitl hasn't proven to be an elite top line center, just because he's paid like one, doesn't make him one.

Away from McDavid, he's shown to be a average top 2 center, capable of 50ish points, while being half decent defensively. RNH has also shown to be a 50 point center while being far better in his 2 way game.

So ya, Edmonton has to sweeten the pot for Ottawa to take on 7 years of overpaid Draisaitl if they are giving up the far superior player, and sending out less money.

I can't think of too many teams that would give up an elite defenseman for an overpaid top 6C, without a serious add.

Ottawa has such a bad track record with trades... whenever they trade their players it seems they fall for getting guys who have already likely had their best career years and are very unlikely to match it or ever come close to it. Guys like Cheechoo, Bobby Ryan, Milan Michalek. They take these guys back in trades and they’re considered to have value at the time but within a year or two of having them... they are just an anchor contract. I see that same thing with players like Draisaitl and RNH... I think they’ve both seen their most productive seasons already by playing with McDavid and I don’t think they will ever come close to matching those with Ottawa. I also don’t see much value in Poolparty since he could be seen as more of a project at this point.

For this reason, if I was Ottawa, I’d be valuing picks and can’t-miss prospects (if there is such a thing) in this EK trade. Young, cost-controlled players who have a high upside. Someone mentioned Colorado trading their first round pick back to Ottawa + Makar... that seems like the right direction for Ottawa. Or getting Petterson + an unprotected 1st round pick from Vancouver. Obviously these kind of returns would require a signing from Karlsson with the new team. Some might call it magic beans but I wouldn’t fall for players like RNH/Draisaitl who take up value on the return but I believe will just be dead weight in a couple years.
