Probably because they have the expertise to inform you the benefits and risks of such a procedure. Kind of like why you should consult an attorney before making a long term legal commitment. My advice is to always consult those who have actual expertise on the issue and be fully informed before making an important decision. Or you can just take advice of random strangers from an Internet discussion board. Both seem like equally intelligent paths to inform yourself on an important issue.
