Players like Bennett and Jankowski are needed for depth and salary cap control. All of our prospects on defense are going to be pressed into action over the next two years as we prepare for the probable departure of Stone, Brodie, and Hamonic. The system is already very thin as Treliving has traded away quality asset after quality asset. We can’t afford to be dealing away any more futures IMO. We need to make a Kiprusoff type deal where find a gem in the rough for next to nothing, and that player turns into a starter. That or we trust our own development system and give our players actual chances to prove themselves.
Outside of the 2018 draft I don’t see how the system is in such bad shape. Thanks to the second Hamilton trade the Flames recouped the 1st rounder they moved in 2015 to get him initially (Hanifin).

2014- 1st, 2 2nds (draft doesn’t look good at all today)
2015 - 1st, 2 2nds
2016- 1st , 2 2nds
2017 - 1st
2018- nothing.

We can’t count 2013 as that was 5 years ago and before Treliving but we had 6 players drafted in the first round and it appears only 2 will be core players and they are signed as core players.

Having said that I agree with you fully that he can’t afford to give away more futures but with the incoming cap crunch next summer he may be forced to trade an existing player on contract for picks.
