I don't know man, I might be off, but its a hot and cold thing and you have to be really on the mark.

If you look at Star Trek Movies. Star Trek TMP to me had an outstanding story, it was unique and intriguing. They had solid special effects in it, lavish looks at the Enterprise, floating majestically through space. When it flew through V'ger's cloud it was stunning, but there wasn't much if any action. It was a pure character driven story, and its not looked upon as fondly. I don't think a movie like that would survive initial reviews.

Star Trek TWOK, probably to me the crown prince of Star Trek Movies. A great movie with strong performances by all of the actors, but it had a heavy action level to it, but what made it work was it was unique, the villain and the hero never met, the action was built entirely out of special effects.

I think that I do agree in principle to what your saying, but I firmly believe that the modern movie goer needs the action and special effects. The problem with the last two movies were that they premise and the stories weren't that good, the villains not that intriguing at all, and in the last movie they went way too far in the action and trying to be cool thing.

I also believe that the problem with franchise movies is that they graded on a curve versus the best of the franchise. For a while Marvel sequels were pretty harshly panned. But Civil War and Infinity War broke the curve.

In the Star Trek films, they're always going to be compared to TWOK, TSFW, TVH home trilogy where they just put out three outstanding story driven with action and effects movies and those movies just leave everything in the dust.

For the next Star Trek movie what they need

A new and unique story
A villain that's actually good
The right mix of effects and action without being the key focus in the movie
