Will Thrills in Wild Win
Pair of Mitchell SH Goals Give Wild Victory
Willie Mitchell is not known for his offensive production at even strength, let alone while killing penalties.
That’s what makes the defensive minded blueliner’s short handed offensive explosion in the Wild’s 4-1 win over Atlanta all the more suprising
Mitchell scored a pair of SH goals 34 seconds apart early in the first period to give the Wild a 2-0 lead over the Thrashers. For a tired and battered Wild squad, the lead allowed them to play a defensive trap for the reset of the game, relying on steady play from all four lines and solid goaltending from Jocelyn Thibault.
Thibault was named the game’s first star, as he stopped 26 of 27 shots he faced. Meanwhile, addition to Mitchell’s short handed heroics, the Wild also received goals from Sami Kapanen and Andrew Brunette.
GM Grant Farhall was pleased with the team’s efforts.
“Atlanta is one of the top teams in the league. To be able to pick up a win against them is huge for us. We are a tired club, but certainly these last two wins have put some wind in our sails. Jocelyn played a great game to us and looked much better than he did in his first start”.
The win allowed put the Wild in second place in the conference and allows them to maintain the lead in the Mikita division. Minnesota now has two days off before playing Toronto on Monday.
Game Notes
-Brendan’s Morrison did not register a point, halting his 10 game point scoring streak. Richard Zednik is on a 6 game point scoring streak.
-Andrew Brunette’s third period goal was his first as a Wild, and first of the season.
-PK specialist Jay Pandolfo and Jan Hrdina assisted on both Mitchell goals.
-The Wild scratched center David Vyborny from the lineup. Although healthy enough to play Farhall felt it was important to give him a night off to fully recover. Robert Reichel was elevated to the third line and veteran Tony Hrkac was inserted into the lineup.
-The Wild’s powerplay had their worst night of the season going 0 for 9, but are still #1 overall in the league.
