But I think a lot of the 'hate' he gets was to do with Gulutzan's deployment. He had no business playing PP or top line duties. Fans started to turn on him when they saw he wasn't producing in those roles, even though it was the coach's fault for putting him there in the first place. But he also never played the rough style he was brought in to play, so it was easy to make him a scapegoat.
Overall a bad contract, one I hope BT learns from going forward. He seems like a good man and the players like him. But this is the best move for the team going forward.

Really, I think Tkachuk is who hurt Brouwer...
I'm sure he was brought in to fill a role, but then Tkachuk made the team "unexpectedly" out of camp his first year, and suddenly the spot the team envisioned for Brouwer wasn't there any longer.
