Skiing kind of has two worlds - it's a bourgeois sport on one end (e.g. the end where all the money is made), but a huge component of the sport is basically the ski bum lifestyle - people whose only real ski-related expense is a season pass, spend no money on food or other resort-related costs (again, where the real money is made) and get gear for cheap off shop form. Having spend a lot of time in that community, I can tell you it's the least bourgeois group of people you'll ever come across. Just google Henrik Harlaut, he pretty much sums it up.
Anyway, yes, mountains > lakes.
