Although the Flames' cap issues aren't much of a secret, it's never nice negotiating a trade from a position of 'I already overspent and need to make a deal to recover'. I would expect that they Flames will determine exactly how they will free up the cap and much cap space they have prior to signing Hanifin. He's an RFA without arbitration - it's not like he's going anywhere. For all we know, the general contract is pretty well agreed upon, but they're waiting to shuffle other contracts before finalizing.
