The only way Gillies makes the team is if Rittich completely fails in the pre-season. If Rittich is even adequate or decent, he will be the back up in Calgary and Gillies will go to Stockton as the number 1 and "marinate". It's just simple asset management.

With Smith's contract expiring, it is imperative that the Flames figure out if Rittich is a legitimate NHL goalie and he will be given a long look. If Rittich can play 30 games in the NHL and post reasonable numbers, Flames could run with Rittich and Gillies next season without signing a veteran goalie.
