Their stats aren't that far apart. Rittich looked great as a backup starter (not so much as a mid game replacement) off the bat. His stint when he had to carry the load was definitely not great at 1-4-1 with almost every game sub .900. He bounced back a bit in March but sucked again at the end of the season (like everyone else).
Gillies looked very good in more games than he looked bad in IMO. He wasn't great in two non-starts in Nov. and Feb. But then he was lights out starting Feb. 22 for 3 games, bad again for 4, but great in his last two games (one was a loss against the Jets who were flying then, but he only let in 2 and was .928). He beat Vegas.
