The Athletic's Kent Wilson has a good look at Hanifin and the analytics of his game in an article today.
Quote:
While there were many other players involved in the Dougie Hamilton trade, the core of the deal is the Calgary Flames front office betting on Noah Hanifin as the return. If the 21-year-old develops into an elite defender, the trade will likely be judged a success by Brad Treliving and company.
Picked fifth overall in 2015, Hanifin jumped directly into the NHL as a teenager after just a single season of college hockey under his belt, so he certainly has the pedigree. Hanifin spent his first two seasons getting his NHL legs before having something of a breakout last year at 20, scoring 10 goals and 32 points in a second pairing role.
The question now is — how far is Hanifin from becoming the high-end first pairing the guy the team envisioned when they acquired him for Hamilton?
