The Leafs have dealt James van Riemsdyk to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Tobias Rieder, Marcus Petterson, a 2019 3rd round pick (Buffalo), and the entire $4.50M of Rieder's salary this upcoming season.

With the emergence of Danton Heinen and some tight cap issues, the Leafs felt the need to part with JVR despite his fine play last season. To acquire a playable winger, a defensive prospect who has already logged NHL minutes, a decent draft pick, and the necessary cap help, this was exactly the kind of deal Toronto was hoping to make.
