They tried pumping it empty, but it just kept filling up. One reason why the diving is so difficult and dangerous is because the water in the cave has been anything but still. There's apparently some really strong currents at places, plus the water is, or at least was "mostly mud" in other places. (This from an interview of a Finnish diver who's a part of the international diving team.)
However, bringing them out has worked so far.
