Those teams also had elite talent, goaltending and coaching. A lot of teams that also had ‘deterrents’ missed the playoffs.
When Johnny was hurt we had Engelland.

Yes, they do play different. On home ice, they line match their top lines to take advantage of the slower, less hockey skilled opposition. The Flames weren’t suddenly a cup contender by signing Reaves to play eight fourth line minutes. The elite teams are already miles above and can win in spite of having a 2 goal scorer on the fourth line.
But I mean I suppose if I had played high level hockey I’d know that Reaves could keep Brodie from getting a concussion, Gaudreau a broken finger and even multiple concussions for Crosby.
