I think you have to be careful about these types of signings. I was reading the Canes' fans opinion of Ryan, and there are some quality posts between all the irrational ones. There are some real concerns with his ability - namely how easily he is knocked off pucks, and other concerns.

At the end of the day, we also have to ask: "Why does Carolina not want to re-sign Ryan?". If he is such a valuable piece, then they should be actively trying to sign him, no? He has no sandpaper in his game at all - that's great if you think this is the 'new type' of 4th liner, but there is a reason why Carolina sought Ferland in this trade. You need sandpaper types in today's game - it is still a contact sport last time I checked.

I am not against signing Ryan - as long as the term AND the dollar value is in line with what it should be for a 4th liner. I don't want to see 2.5 million. I don't even want 2 million.

In today's cap world, you pay your stars good money, and you pay your replacement-level players replacement level money. You don't splurge on 4th liners. That's how you get into cap trouble. Brouwer is only a recent reminder of that. Stajan - even though he was loved in the room, decent on draws and decent defensively - was another overpaid bottom 6. Jones.

Mason Raymond added a lot of speed and goal scoring ability... buy out.

Lance Bouma was an expensive re-signing - heart and soul player who put up 17 goals, was fantastic on the penalty kill, loved in the room, and a complete warrior on the ice. Bought out.

Flames were smart to move on from Nystrom.

You just don't overpay for 4th line roles. It is great that Treliving is staying away from the 6x6 contracts, but what is the point of staying away from those contracts if you fill your bottom 6 with high-priced players?

I am 100% fine with Ryan - though with some reservations. I just don't want Calgary to be paying both term and dollars for what should be essentially a 4th liner with PK ability. Be wary of guys who get too much opportunity somewhere, and thinking it will translate to another team. He will be useful, I have no doubt, but if we are paying market value (or even just below that) for his production in Carolina, we are bound to be disappointed and left with a higher priced 4th liner.
