As others have alluded to, this trade feels like a situation where the Flames had already decided Fox and Hamilton should be moved on, and Treliving zeroed in on trades that would allow Calgary to replace Hamilton's role. With Peters' insight, Hanifin became the main target for this, and Lindholm was a good secondary piece but the Flames needed to add more to pry him out of Carolina. In that sense, it seems Ferland was the most likely "throw in" or rather the piece that got the deal done.

My first impressions of this were that this is a wretched overpayment by Calgary, but I have a feeling Hanifin - who is still maturing - will prove a good replacement for Hamilton (whose game had its warts to go along with his obvious talents).

Going forward a young core of Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Hanifin, Valimaki, isn't too bad. Still need a sniper in there though.

I'll reserve judgment on this one until the contracts are signed.
