One thing we know for certain, Brad Treliving has tied his future to that of the Carolina Hurricanes. His hiring of Bill Peters and this trade certainly puts his future with the Calgary Flames on the line. The team steps up next year and makes some noise, or Treliving will be shown the door. Treliving has pushed the last of his stack all in on this hand. His last move of note will be on July 1st, when he can spend what ever cap space we have available.
On the trade itself, I don’t like it. Gave up too much for too little in return. I don’t care about Ferland’s status a full season away, he was a guy that filled an important position on the hockey club. In the search for more goals, we gave up more than we got in return. The only way Treliving can save this is if he gets both players on good long term contracts, and then grabs a goal scorer on July 1st. If he doesn’t find that extra player in free agency, we are in the exact same position we were last season. All that he accomplished so far was a shuffle of deck chairs.
I’ll wait to pass ultimate judgment on this deal in 10 days, after the free agent dust has settled. That will determine whether Treliving can maintain any trust with the fans, or if he’s become a lame duck.
