The problem was that another defenseman of any type wasn't what the Flames really needed. Defense, both in the league and in the system, was by far the strongest part of the franchise. What the Flames lacked, both in the league and in the system, was a top 6 scoring winger. Spending the assets on that position instead of Hamonic would have been a wiser move for the Flames last year, and they need to essentially undo it this offseason by moving a defenseman for a scoring winger. No reason Hamonic shouldn't be in the mix in terms of players Flames could move.
