What if he signed a one year "show me" maximum value deal ($16-17M)?
He would still have the potential to be a UFA again next summer.
Gives Lamorello and Trotz one year to convince him that the team is going in the right direction. Why sign now long term if you are not comfortable with the team, give them a chance if you would like to stay, and keep your options open.
