One of those things that causes me gripe about common law and drives me nuts. I think marriage as-is should be all about going "all-in." The sharing of assets, finances, the good and the bad, and supporting each other. This is why marriage should be considered extremely important and why the decision to take the plunge is such a big deal.
Dating, living together or common law should be just what it is - a precursor to marriage and if things do not work out, you go your separate ways. Whatever money you put into the relationship, you get back. If one person makes 1 mil per year and the other makes 10K, leave it at that. It's lunacy that you have to pay out someone or pay for their living style just because you dated, lived together and were together.
Hopefully this situation does not turn into a soap opera and remains quite private. Unfortunately, reporters are going to hound and dig up dirt on everyone in this story including the Karlsson family who are indeed the victims, whomever the perpetrator ends up being. You can be certain people are already looking up any dirt on Melinda's medical history which is beyond unfortunate given the accusations.
