You don't have to be dumb to like shows like that. My ex-girlfriend was a lawyer with an extremely high IQ, but loved the Kardashians, Real Housewives, etc....
It's the modern day equivalent of pulp books, soap operas, tabloids, etc...
Not all intelligent people sit around reading Aristotle and pontificating in the meaning of life in their free time. Some people just like mindless entertainment. The change from the 60s has more to do with a chance in what's considered vulgar. Prior to the internet, people were very controlled in what they could access, both information and entertainment wise. Now you can find anything. Audiences no longer have the same hang-ups about what's considered proper anymore.
I do agree that the middle class is being destroyed, however. That's a separate issue and has more to do with the baby boomers economic strangle hold on capital/real estate and wages that aren't keeping up with inflation.
