Even if he has an attitude, so what if he produces on the ice. Many NFL/NBA players have huge egos but are superstars on the field.
I'm also skeptical of injury history. If a running back has a history of groin or foot injuries, that is a red flag. Kane's injuries seem to be random. If anything, his value is underrated since people will discount him due to low counting totals. Moreover, he was likely playing hurt for durations of his games, further depressing his totals. A fully healthy Kane should project much higher than his historics.
Guy has size, toughness, goal scoring touch, and takes a regular shift on the PK. Nothing outrageous about this contract at all.

I agree in not holding a players past against them for their entire career, but I have a hard time believing this guy has really changed all that much. He's matured to learn when to hold back, but I think his arrogance flares up more than I'd want in a locker-room still.
Just January he was making the news for pissing off teammates:

“Shut the [expletive] up, you selfish [expletive],” Buffalo defenceman Justin Falk screamed at Evander Kane before shoving the Sabres’ star winger[...]
... is probably not what I want on my team. They talk in that article about how this happens all the time, and I believe it. But when it's happening around him it shows more of the same.
I don't doubt that his time with the Sharks went well, but it's a pretty short time for a guy to keep his stuff together. His rap-sheet of pissing people off and arrogance is pretty long and I don't think we've heard the end of it. The Sharks are probably aware of the gamble, and if it pays off this will be a great deal. I'm not holding my breath though...
