I get that not all contracts pan out, but they do show the relative values that GM's place on particular skill sets of players at the time they were signed.
GM's believe that Kane has a far superior skill set to Brouwer based on what they were willing to pay for that skill set.
Now, they may turn out to be wrong, but I will take the opinion of a group of knowledgeable GM's over a few posters who claim that Kane is not much different than Brouwer.
Today, Kane was offered $7Mx7 years. Brouwer would likely be lucky to get a contract for more than minimum. Yet some claim they have similar skill sets. The market suggests otherwise.
